What came before Indie Music
Sun records and Motown where two of the first Independent record labels in the 1050's and 60's however the artists such as Jackson 5, Johnny Cash and B.B King where never described as Indie because over the years The term Indie has evolved to mean more than just belonging to an independent record label. The musical description of the word Indie has emerged from post- punk, alternative and new wave music released in the late 1970's. The Smiths were one of the first bands to join the term Indie both musically and culturally together. Other bands then began taking inspiration from them and thus making indie a genre to follow and build upon. The first Indie Music scene is known to have originated in the United Kingdom when the c86 cassette was released by British magazine NME. This was the starting point for Indie music. It is a compilation of music with jangling guitars and melodic power pop song structure. from independent British music labels. The CD issue released in 2006 is now known as '48 Tracks From The Birth Of Indie Pop'. Since this the scene has made a massive comeback and now the question is; What is the future of Indie?
What is Indie today?
Indie music is far from dead and is constantly changing and adapting. It looks as if it is only going to get bigger. with more and more new Indie artists coming forward with their music. BBC introducing is one platform these artists choose to showcase their music through and Indie is one of the biggest genres they receive music from. You can see just from the album chart Independent music has no one sound or person to appeal to there is nothing that can confine the genre to just one 'Thing'. Artists have used alternative music today to make an impact to society or its listeners some even seem to want to change the world with it. Imagine that? All music has the opportunity to change perspectives with the help of its artist but none as different and as broad as this I think.
